Start Thinking Together In The Right Way


Being at the helm of affairs and having all the good ideas may not be enough to grow your brand. At some point, you need extra hands to help you manage your business. Every business scouts the best brains, conscious of the impact these employees will make on the brand. Nonetheless, you may build an enviable team by hiring the most creative and experienced from the market, yet, be unable to get the best out of the team. There is just one explanation, you may be practicing an ineffective brainstorming method.

Emphasis is placed on brainstorming. It can be described as the catalyst for brand growth. It is the platform where all the ideas that lead to brand improvement are shared. 

For most organizations, group brainstorming is the preferred choice. Is this method yielding the expected results? Is it being practiced properly? What makes a fruitful brainstorming session?

There are two groups of people, introverts and extroverts. There is a high probability of finding these two groups of people in a brainstorming team, and regardless their intellectual ability, their nature may hinder expected results. It is no secret the outspoken ones gain an upper hand and control discussions. The purpose of brainstorming is to gather as many ideas as possible. The mixed group of extroverts and introverts may hinder achieving this purpose, so what is the way out? “Brain writing,” is an appropriate method to curb this situation. Before the team sits to begin discussions, every member writes their ideas or thoughts on paper. This gives everyone the opportunity to share ideas whether they speak or not when verbal discussions begin.  

The facilitator plays an important role to achieve a fruitful brainstorming period. A ranking member of the institution is usually not best pick for the role. It allows for free involvement of everyone without harbouring thoughts of dealing with the boss. However, the facilitator must be able to control the discussion, keep it within time, manage egos and communicate the purpose for the discussion properly.

To achieve good results, the topics for discussion need to be SMART – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reasonable and Time-Bound. State clearly what you want from the team in simple language. Avoid asking for more than one thing at a time. 

Every answer or idea is good and must be written down. Embrace every ridiculous idea and do not create barriers that will hinder the ideas being put on the table. Brainstorming is not the moment you choose what can be done and what cannot. Do not criticize or evaluate ideas during brainstorming. 

After all the points and discussion has been exhausted, you now come to the moment of analysis. This is best done by a single person. In the analysis period, all the ideas shared are organized into a good presentation that covers the whole discussion. In organizing the ideas shared, follow three simple steps
1. Clarify points ( if any point was not written correctly, consult those who participated in the session)
2. Categorize ideas (there are likely to find similar ideas running through the pile you collected. Organize then and merge where necessary)
3. Rank ideas in order ( after categorizing, rank the ideas gathered in the order of what can be done easily until the most complicated ideas at the bottom)
