With about 71% of the earth surface covered with water, while adult humans are estimated to have about 60% of their body made up of water, the essence of water to life cannot be underrated. In every aspect of human life, water finds itself playing a very pivotal role. In religion, health and entertainment, the presence and essence of water is highly visible.

Health professionals always advise that a person drinks about 2 liters of water daily. However, most people only find water on their tables during meals or right after meals and this sets the tone for discussion in this article. Is it a best practice to drink water during meals?

To one school of thought, drinking water during meals or right after meals severely hampers your stomach's digestive powers and causes unstable insulin levels. Another group of health practitioners harbour a counter opinion.  

To those who support drinking water during meals, the hold the opinion that drinking water when taking your meals is essential for your digestive tract to work well. Although the food we eat may contain some amount of water, it may not be enough to keep your bowels moving regularly, thus, the need for extra water to act as natural lubricant for intestinal walls.

Drinking water during meals has also been identified as one of the most effective ways to prevent constipation. Aside assisting in a smooth digestive process, water during meals has also been identified as a weight maintenance strategy. Drinking a couple glasses of water during meals can actually curb your appetite, lessening your chances of indulging in gluttony. 

Nonetheless, it is most beneficial to stay hydrated throughout the day. Drinking while you eat should therefore not be too much. Drink warm water and drink it sparingly. Adding a little water to your diet is not a bad practice, but always keep in mind that sometimes what the body need should be prioritized. Do not be rigid with your body because of the information you gather.
